WMS Celebrates Black History Month

Warner Middle School will celebrate Black History Month with fun and engaging activities throughout the month of February. 

Highlights* planned for the month include: 

  • Ohio History Connection Museum in a Box: Underground Railroad – February 1–11 
  • History Bingo – February 1, 8, 15, 22 (Library, each week by grade)
  • Book Club Wednesday: Finding Langston by Lisa Cline-Ransome – February 2, 9, 16, 23 
  • Soul Food Carry-In – February 10
  • CSU Band Performances – February 15 
  • PBIS Afternoon Movie: Soul (Disney), A Wrinkle in Time, Akeelah and the Bee, or Black Panther ($5 Buc Bucks + permission form required) – February 16 (2:15-4:15)
  • CSU Demonstrations: X-Plosive Dancers and Poetry Team – February 17 
  • African Dance Demonstration – February 25 
  • Storyteller – February 25 (2d period)
*Schedule subject to change. Unless otherwise noted, activities will take place during lunch and/or 4th period advisory. 

Ongoing activities will include: a historic timeline in the hallway, posters, t-shirts (optional for students to purchase), daily trivia during lunch, sing-alongs with the WMS Choir during advisory periods on Wednesdays, and more. Fun prizes, including gift cards for local student-favorite restaurants, will be provided as rewards for trivia, bingo, and other activities.  Students will also be able to use their earned “Buc Bucks” to purchase themed gifts such as bookmarks, bracelets and pencils.

To get students excited about the celebration, teachers will decorate the door to their rooms, while clubs will participate in a contest to decorate bulletin boards throughout the building. 

In addition, the seventh-grade language arts students will create an African Cultural Legacy display, while eighth grade language arts students will create a separate display reflecting on and illustrating African American poetry. 

Leadership students will also make daily announcements throughout the month to let other students know what events are coming up, during which they will share history, songs, and even poems.
