Preschool FAQs

About Xenia Preschool
Xenia Preschool is a Five Star “Step Up to Quality” rated program with the Ohio Department of Education. It serves students ages 3 to 5, and provides students with high quality education in a learning environment that is stimulating, safe, and nurturing.

How can Xenia Preschool help my child?
Xenia Preschool encourages children to learn and grow by providing a foundation of developmentally appropriate experiences where they can succeed in a safe and nurturing environment.

We believe that each child is a unique individual and that all children can learn.  Our preschool programs provide inclusive settings that recognize children’s varied abilities, interests, needs, and learning styles.

We believe children learn best through meaningful play.  Our play based, child-centered program reflects the integration of physical, cognitive, social, emotional, language, self-help and aesthetic areas for the total development of the child.  Meaningful play encourages curiosity, discovery, and problem solving which provides the opportunity for individual growth and the development of a positive self-image.

How old does my child have to be to enroll?
The Preschool is open to children ages 3 to 5, who are residents of Xenia Community Schools. To enroll for a specific school year, students must have turned 3 by September 30 .

Children ages 3+ attend the traditional preschool program.

Calendar
Xenia Preschool follows the regular school year calendar for the district, including holiday and seasonal breaks such as fall, winter, and summer vacations.

What happens in the screening process?
The screening process takes approximately an hour, and involves a simple assessment of each child’s current skills and abilities. This assessment helps ensure that children receive the supports necessary for a successful preschool experience.

Are there costs to attend the Preschool?
Xenia Preschool is partially funded through the Ohio Department of Education. The program is provided free of charge to students with disabilities. Tuition for non-disabled students will be determined using a sliding scale based on household income. The cost of monthly tuition can range from $35-$140. For children who qualify for the ECE program, tuition may be waived 100%.

What about transportation?
Due to the half-day format, we do not provide transportation to/from the Preschool except in cases of students with special needs. Family members and/or day care providers drop off and pick up students each day. Only adults approved by the parent/guardian of each child may pick up students.

I’m in! What is the process to enroll?
All families must complete a registration process, followed by a screening for the individual student. Remember that space is limited, and placement is not guaranteed.

For registration, you will need to complete an application through Final Forms. You will also need to provide the following documentation:
Proof of Income
Birth Certificate of Student
Proof of custody (if applicable)
Proof of Residency (copy of lease, if renting)
Parent/Guardian ID
Immunization Records

Your child’s follow-up screening will be scheduled prior to the start of the school year.

When is the registration process?

Registration for the following school year begins in March, with screening opportunities throughout the spring and early summer. Registration for each year generally closes at the end of September. (See the XCS Enrollment Calendar for this year's dates.)

Note that there is NOT a printed registration packet. Applications must be submitted through Final Forms, following the process detailed on our Enrollment and Forms page. Upon completing the online forms, Preschool families will be placed in line for available spaces.

Families will be contacted to schedule a required screening prior to the start of the school year. Note that applications received during summer months may not be processed until late summer due to summer staffing levels.

After the application and screening process is complete, placement will be made based on the number of spaces available for new students in one of three areas: 1) students with special needs, 2) economically disadvantaged students, and 3) all other students.
