XCS On the Ballot

Xenia Community Schools is on the ballot for Tuesday, May 5, 2026. Issue #1 is the RENEWAL of a 1.3 mil Permanent Improvement (PI) levy that would be in effect for five (5) years from 2026-2031.

  • Issue #1 is a proposed RENEWAL of an existing 1.3 mil Permanent Improvement (PI) levy. This levy was first approved by voters in 1986 and has been renewed every five years since.

  • By Ohio law (ORC §5705.01), PI funds can only be used for expenditures that have an estimated useful life of five years or more. This includes "bricks and mortar" projects, technology, and equipment.

    • Funds expenditures with useful life of 5+ years.
    • CAN Pay For: Building Repairs (Roofs, HVAC), Technology Upgrades, Security Systems, Maintenance Equipment.
    • CANNOT Pay For: Any salaries or daily consumables.
  • No. Under Ohio law, Permanent Improvement funds cannot be used for the daily operating expenses of the district, such as employee salaries, benefits, or consumable supplies (like paper or fuel).

Costs like these are paid for from the General Fund.

  • No. Because this is a renewal of an existing levy, it does not increase the current tax rate for residents.

  • The levy is set at 1.3 mils. According to the Greene County Auditor, the cost is $13.00 per year for every $100,000 of home market value.

Home Market Value Annual Cost Monthly Cost
    $100,000 $13 $1.08
    $200,000 $26 $2.17
    $250,000 $32.50 $2.71

  • Over the last five years, the PI levy has funded several infrastructure and security projects, including:

    • Security: Installation of upgraded cameras and secure door access district-wide.
    • Facility Repairs: Flooring replacement in elementary buildings, parking lot and sidewalk repairs, upgraded exterior lighting.
    • Major Renovations: Completion of the Benner FIeld House (2019), the Bob Hope Auditorium (2021), and Bill Richey Library (2025).
  • If the renewal is not approved, the district would no longer have these dedicated funds for maintenance and infrastructure. Future repairs and equipment needs would have to be funded by the General Fund, which currently pays for instructional programs and daily operations.

  • The election will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

In Ohio, polls on Election Day are open from 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.
