Second Graders Explore Local Government and Community Helpers in Downtown Xenia

Our Tecumseh Elementary second graders recently took their Social Studies lessons on the road for an exciting, hands-on field trip throughout downtown Xenia!
The day was packed with informative stops and warm local welcomes:
- Local Government in Action: Students received a special behind-the-scenes tour of the City Building from Assistant City Manager Eric Henry, followed by a meet-and-greet with Mayor Reynolds, Councilman Rubio, and City Manager Brent Merriman, who helped students understand how local government works.
- Community Helpers: The class toured the Xenia Fire Department, where the highlight was definitely hopping inside a real fire truck!
- Historic Landmarks: After waving to local construction workers along the way, students enjoyed lunch on the lawn at the Greene County Courthouse before Deputy Voskhul guided them through a tour of the historic building.
- First Responders: The group learned about emergency responses at the 911 Communications Center with Mrs. Beegle, and wrapped up the day playing together at Shawnee Park.
This trip directly connects to the second grade Social Studies curriculum, and provided invaluable context for the students' upcoming reading unit on local government.
A big thank you to the Xenia community for welcoming our students so warmly, and to our XCS Board of Education for their support of impactful learning experiences like this field trip.
