Last week, our 3rd graders at Shawnee Elementary had a blast bringing figures of speech to life for Figurative Language Dress-Up Day! Mastering non-literal language is a major milestone in third grade reading comprehension, helping students move past exact definitions to grasp an author's tone, intent, and context clues.

Highlights of the Day

• Raining Cats and Dogs: Students arrived equipped with raincoats, umbrellas, and plush kittens and puppies taped overhead to illustrate downpours.
• Smart Cookie: A graduation cap paired with chocolate chip cookie cutout brought this classic phrase to life.
• Walking on Air: Sneakers taped with fuzzy cotton-ball "clouds" added a little bounce to steps down the hall.
• Liar, Liar!: Pants with flames taped and pinned to them burned up the playground.

By turning abstract idioms, similes, and metaphors into tangible costumes, our students built a direct connection between vocabulary and real-world understanding.
