2023 Young Entrepreneurs Project Showcase

XTAR Fourth Grade Young Entrepreneurs Host Successful Showcase
Posted on 05/04/2023
On Thursday, April 27, Xenia's fourth grade students in the gifted program hosted the annual Young Entrepreneurs Project Showcase at Benner Field House.

This year's students made history when all eight teams were able to pay back their loans and personal investments while earning profit. This is the first time in the history of this entrepreneurial simulation that all teams have earned a profit. Each student received a $10 gift card and the winning team earned a prize pack with everything they need to start their own lemonade stand.

This year's overall winner was Crafty Cozy Woodwork. James and Bentley made wood benches with metal legs. Their teacher mentor was Leah Pham, but our faithful volunteer, Mr. Collins, spent many hours teaching our woodworking groups important skills necessary to make quality products.

As a whole, the showcase raised $2,753. Ten percent will be donated to The Humane Society of Greene County, the local charity voted on by the students to be this year's beneficiary. The fourth graders also donated items from their inventory for a silent auction held by The Xenia Community Schools Foundation held last month.

The remaining money will be used by next year's fourth graders to purchase raw materials for the products they plan to manufacture for the 2023-2024 Project Showcase.

About the Entrepreneur Program
Each year, students in XTAR, the District’s gifted learning program, complete an entrepreneur chapter that culminates in a showcase aimed at family, friends, and the school community. For the program, students complete a small business simulation, where they develop a business plan, acquire a "bank" loan, develop a website to showcase their business and product, and manufacture goods to be sold during the showcase.

Originally a 3-day small business simulation that was part of the fourth-grade gifted classroom curriculum, the Showcase has grown to become an annual community event where student teams brainstorm products, pitch a business plan to secure a loan, make the product, and sell it to community members. The first ten percent of money raised is donated to a charity voted on by the students, and the remaining funds are used to pay it forward to the next group of fourth graders to support their future Showcase.
