Today's Black History Month Historical Figure is Rebecca Lee Crumpler. Born in 1833. She worked from 1852-1860 as a nurse in Massachusetts. She became the first black woman to receive an M.D. degree. She graduated from the New England Female Medical College.
She was subject to "intense racism" and sexism while practicing medicine. During this time, many men believed that a man's brain was 10 percent bigger than a woman's brain on average. Because of this, many male physicians did not respect Rebecca Lee Crumpler, and would not approve her prescriptions for patients or listen to her medical opinions. Still, Rebecca Lee Crumpler persevered and worked passionately.
She later moved back to Boston to continue to treat women and children. The Rebecca Lee Pre-Health Society at Syracuse University and the Rebecca Lee Society, one of the first medical societies for African-American women, were named after her. Her Joy Street house is a stop on the Boston Women's Heritage Trail.

Additionally, Chisholm was the first woman to campaign for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Known as “Fighting Shirley,”
  •  Vision screenings will be held today for 9th grade students and for new students to the building.  Students should bring their contact and/or glasses to the screening

2/1/23

  • Today start's Black history month. We will be featuring historical figures on announcements, Interviews with former alumni, a door decorating contest and other items. Today we celebrate a person who you may not know. Most known for his military career, Benjamin O. Davis Sr. became the first Black general in the United States Army. He led the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II and played an essential role in integrating the U.S. Air Force (oh, yeah, and he was the second Black general in Air Force history, too). Not only did Davis Sr. break barriers, but he was also instrumental to the eventual desegregation of the U.S. military. Thank you General Davis!
  • The ASL meeting that was scheduled for after school today has been cancelled.
  • Need some sugary treats to end your day? The Xenia eXplorers will be selling baked goods in the cafeteria after school. Yum!
