This spring, Mrs. Hacker's Kindergarten class at Arrowood has been learning all about the plant life cycle and what plants need to grow. On Friday, April 25, they invited a local beekeeper, Bill Starrett, to tell them more about bees!
Wearing his bee suit and showcasing the real equipment he uses to care for his bees, he walked students through the life cycle of a bee, showed them his "bee box" where his bees live, brought some honeycomb and beeswax for them to feel, and even let them taste some of his honey! They also got an up close look at his glass hive, where they were able to see hundreds of drone bees, worker bees, larvae, and honey being stored in the honeycomb.
Every student got to try on his bee hat and he even surprised them with a little jar of his local honey for each of us to take home! This hands-on class really made an impression on students as they learned about the impact of bees on the life cycle of plants they have been growing in their classroom.
