The XHS Winter Blood Drive was an amazing success this week! The students exceeded their goal of collecting 45 pints of blood, with student and staff donors giving an incredible 60 pints during Tuesday's drive through the Community Blood Center (CBC).
HOSA, the future health professionals group at Xenia High School, hosts three blood drives throughout the school year. To plan for the drive, students encouraged staff and eligible students to participate, and worked with teachers and the CBC to coordinate all aspects of the day. The CBC was especially impressed with this drive, noting that other schools hosting drives this January have averaged 30 pints.
To make sure the day was a success, a committee of HOSA students staffed the check-in table, cooked sausage and pancakes, and supported all of the donors throughout the process. They then helped ensure that each and every donor was feeling fine as they fueled up and headed back to class after donating.
HOSA will be hosting one final drive this spring on Tuesday, April 8.
What is HOSA?
HOSA is the future health professionals group at Xenia High School for students who are completing the Biomedical Science Pathway, a satellite program of the GCCC led by Dr. Martha Rutan. Through immersive, hands-on opportunities for students to build specific medical skills, as well as learn to problem-solve and work collaboratively, the program lays a solid foundation to pursue a medical career. The group participates in competitive events, and also focuses on related service projects, such as planning and running the blood drives held three times each year at XHS.
