JustWrite Competition 2023

XHS Students Compete in JustWrite Competition
Posted on 03/03/2023
On Saturday, February 18, eight students from Xenia High School competed for the first time ever in the JustWrite Ohio Regional Tournament at Dublin Coffman High School, where they competed against students from seventeen other schools. During the event, teams from the XHS Writing Club competed in two divisions: Division I (grades 9-10) and Division II (grades 11-12).

For the competition, students participated in three different rounds of writing in real-time! For each round, students entered their assigned room, were given a prompt and a specific genre, and had 45 minutes to handwrite a story adhering to the guidelines — all without the use of technology! Students were also able to submit an original poem based on a division-specific topic for judging.

After the competition portion of the day was complete, students enjoyed listening to a presentation by Kurt Dinan, the award-winning author of Don't Get Caught.

Our students did incredibly well at this first competition with both individual and team recognitions!

Senior Vincent Baker won the Laureate Choice Award for his poem "The History of a Crucial Art," which addressed the Division II prompt: The Evolution of Language. Vincent will advance to the state poetry competition, and will be creating a second poem for evaluation. His poem will be published in the 2023 anthology.
