This spring, Xenia High School’s lacrosse team will become the first school-sponsored team in the Miami Valley League.

“We are proud to expand our list of school-sponsored sports at Xenia High School,” said Nathan Kopp, Athletic Director for Xenia Community Schools. “The dedication of the athletes, as well as coaches Scott Dye and Matt Bartley, over the past few years has really allowed the program to flourish to the point that this was the next logical step to grow the program.”

This will be the fifth year that Xenia High School has fielded a lacrosse team, although it previously functioned as a club sport. The team has successfully sustained the number of participants over multiple seasons, warranting the change in status. The shift will make the team eligible to compete in the Ohio High School Athletic Association tournament, and students on the team will also be able to earn varsity letters and receive physical education credit for their participation.

"It is always exciting to be able to expand the options available to our student athletes, and we are looking forward to participating at this level as a district," Kopp added.

Since 2017, OHSAA has considered lacrosse to be an “emerging” sport, meaning that it is growing in popularity, and has hosted a state tournament since that year.

For its first year, XHS will field a varsity team only.
