Visioning Committee Makes Recommendation to Board

Visioning Committee Makes Recommendation to Board
Posted on 12/10/2019
After nearly a year of work, the Xenia Community Schools Visioning Committee made its formal recommendation to the XCS Board to replace Warner Middle School on the current site.

“We are grateful to the committee members who have dedicated their time and energy to this process and persevered to get to this point,” notes Dr. Gabe Lofton, Superintendent of XCS. “Moving Xenia Schools forward successfully on this matter really required us to take a step back and listen to the community – and that is what we have tried to do here.”

The Visioning Committee’s recommendation followed a year of meetings, surveys, and listening sessions that brought a diversity of opinions to the table, and took into account the reality of the district’s current facilities. Throughout the process, the committee considered the future of both Warner Middle School and Xenia High School.

At the December 9, 2019 regular board meeting, XCS Board members received the report from two representatives of the Visioning Committee who made the official recommendation. The presenters were Kim McManus and Maurice Lee, both of whom are parents in the district, engaged volunteers, and members of the Xenia community.

McManus and Lee shared the work of the committee throughout the past year, and the rationale for the recommendation to prioritize Warner Middle School. The committee narrowed down nearly two dozen options based on the best information available, taking a particularly hard look at the reality of the expense of replacing buildings and the current status of the buildings.

Before adjourning, the Board approved a Resolution of Intent to Participate in the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission Expedited Local Partnership Program. This paperwork is part of an application to put the district in the queue for potential reimbursement for any bond issues adopted for November 2020.

A final decision about putting an issue on the ballot for November 2020 will be made by the March 2020 regular board meeting.
