Piecing Together History

Students Learn about the History of Slavery
Seventh grade gifted students have been learning about the history of slavery. They read a fictional novel, studied the Emancipation Proclamation, and learned about the Civil Rights movement. The theme of the unit is called "Hope in Difficult Times."

The students also looked at the imagery and colors used in a quilt made by an African American woman titled "The Unyielding Path of Hope." After studying the quilt, the students wrote a story incorporating ideas from the quilt then created their own quilt square to illustrate the symbolism in their stories.
