Long-time Board of Education Member Passed Away

On December 6, 2018, Xenia Board of Education member William Spahr passed away. Mr. Spahr leaves a legacy of dedicated service to his community and an unrelenting commitment to supporting students during his 40-year career in education.

Mr. Spahr was elected to the Xenia Community Schools Board of Education seven times, serving a total of 27 years. During that time, he also served on various other boards, including serving almost 30 years with the Greene County Career Center Board of Education. He was a member of the Xenia Economic Growth Corporation, a member of the Ohio School Boards Association Executive Committee, as well as the Ohio School Boards Association Cabinet, the Ohio Region 10 Educational Service Center Committee, and the High Schools that Work Board of Directors.

Last month Mr. Spahr was recognized at a state-wide conference for school leaders for his tenure with the Xenia Community Schools Board of Education. Mr. Spahr was also the past recipient of the Ohio School Board Associations' prestigious Award of Achievement. In recognition of receiving an Honorary American FFA Degree, November 19, 2014 was deemed "William Spahr Day" by the city of Xenia for his efforts to constantly advocate for agricultural education.

Mr. Spahr was a graduate of Xenia High School and spent his entire career in the Fairborn City School district, teaching Industrial and Computer Technology for 42 years. He also worked in Fairborn's Printing Services Department.

Mr. Spahr's contribution and dedication to students in Xenia and Fairborn is exemplary. He made a difference in the lives of countless individuals. Not only was he a kind and generous man, he also held steadfast and fought for his belief that all students should be entitled to equal access to the educational opportunities that best served them, whether that be access to college preparatory courses, career-preparation courses, or agricultural studies.

Mr. Spahr's leadership, goodwill, and dedication will be missed by all.
