Xenia Community Schools (XCS) is joining in the national recognition week for school counselors by declaring February 3-7 to be School Counselors Week.

“For students to succeed in the classroom, there are challenges that need to be met,” said Dr. Gabe Lofton, XCS Superintendent. “Addressing students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development requires highly qualified and trained staff members, and Xenia Schools are lucky to have a strong group of professionals to support our students at every grade level.”

Xenia Community Schools currently employs 11 counselors in total. Each elementary building has one counselor, with three located at both Warner Middle School and Xenia High School.

School counselors support a safe learning environment for students, and work directly with teachers, administrators, and family members to ensure that each student succeeds. This work takes place as individual work with students to help with specific areas of concern, as well as through programs like the anti-bullying initiatives at Warner, the award-winning mentor program at Cox Elementary, as well as college and career planning at the high school.

“The perception is often that counselors are here to help students experiencing difficulties – and that is definitely a big part of our responsibility,” notes Erin O’Brien, School Counselor for XCS. “But there are dozens of ways we can help students at every grade level set personal goals and plan for a positive future.”
